The Bekwai Municipal Assembly is one of the forty-three (43) Districts in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. When it was first established in 1988 under the name Amansie East District, it was formed from the former Amansie District Council and was initially established as an ordinary district assembly. Later, on November 12, 2003 (effectively February 18, 2004), President John Agyekum Kufuor issued an executive order splitting off the western portion of the district to form Amansie Central District; the remaining portion of the district has been kept as Amansie East District. Subsequently, on February 29, 2008, the eastern portion of the district was divided to become Bosome Freho District, and the remaining portion was granted municipal district assembly status by Legislative Instrument (L.I. 1906, 2007), which has since been renamed as Bekwai Municipal Districts, with Bekwai as its capital Town. The Municipality's borders are shared by the Bosomtwe District to the north, the Adansi North District to the south, the Bosome-Freho District to the east, and the Amansie Central and West Districts to the west.
